With increasingly stringent national environmental protection policies and the mining industry's shift toward intensification and green development, energy conservation and equipment upgrades have become key to enhancing mining company competitiveness. The growing demand for high-grade concentrates places higher demands on the ore crushing and grinding processes. Traditional high-grade concentrate production involves complex procedures and high energy consumption, while variations in raw ore grade also lead to significant fluctuations in product quality. The mining industry is therefore in urgent need of a reliable, efficient, and intelligent grinding drive system to reduce energy consumption and enable more flexible production.

In active response to national policies and the needs of the industry, NGC has developed a brand-new tower mill permanent magnet–gear drive system, leveraging its strategic transformation "from transmission to drive". Featuring an integrated mechanical-electrical design, the system incorporates a permanent magnet motor, gear transmission, and a variable-frequency control system. This maximizes the combined advantages of high efficiency from the permanent magnet motor, high torque density ratio from the gear transmission, and intelligent control from the variable-frequency system. Compared with traditional asynchronous drive systems, this product achieves a 40% reduction in height, a 25% reduction in weight, and an energy-saving rate of over 8%, fully embodying the company’s philosophy of "reliability, efficiency, sustainability, and added value".

Reliability

The tower mill permanent magnet–gear drive system features a low-speed drive solution, significantly reducing vibration and noise. Before leaving the factory, the product has undergone stringent testing procedures, including permanent magnet motor type testing, drive system no-load testing, and mechanical seal testing. Field measurements by customers have shown that, under full-load operation, the system achieves vibration levels of less than 2.0 mm/s, noise levels below 80 dB(A), a permanent magnet motor temperature rise of less than 45 K, and a gear temperature rise of less than 35 K. The drive system operates stably and reliably, meeting all operating requirements of the tower mill mainframe.

Efficiency

Through the integrated design of a low-speed permanent magnet motor and gear transmission, the drive chain is significantly shortened, reducing energy losses. The low-speed permanent magnet motor offers high energy efficiency, with no coupling losses in the system, while forced lubrication of the gears eliminates churning losses. Overall system efficiency exceeds 94%, representing an improvement of about 8% compared to traditional asynchronous motor + gearbox (oil-immersed lubrication) drive systems, significantly reducing long-term operating costs.

Sustainability

Under the same power and load conditions, the permanent magnet–gear drive system achieves a 40% reduction in height, greatly reducing plant building height requirements; a 25% reduction in weight, significantly reducing the use of raw materials for the drive system; and outstanding energy-saving performance that substantially reduces electricity consumption. These features help mining enterprises achieve green and low-carbon production.

Added Value

With its intelligent variable-frequency closed-loop vector control system, the drive system offers full-load soft-start capability, with starting current only one-third that of asynchronous systems, significantly reducing the required capacity of plant transformers. By adjusting the drive system speed, the product precisely matches beneficiation processes, adapting to varying raw ore grades, and thereby significantly increasing production flexibility and economic benefits.
